The concept: A FMCG brand built from scratch
Kepiko is a speculative AI-native branding project that explores how generative AI can be used to create an entire consumer brand from scratch—from strategy and visual identity to packaging, advertising, characters, audiovisual content and digital experiences. Rather than producing isolated assets, the project investigates how AI can support the creation of a coherent brand universe with the same level of consistency expected from a real commercial launch.
At the heart of the project is an intentionally absurd product: individually blister-packed sunflower seeds presented as a premium lifestyle object rather than an everyday snack. By transforming an ordinary product into an exaggerated ritual, Kepiko questions traditional notions of value, desirability and branding, reflecting how contemporary consumers—particularly Gen Z—often connect with products through identity, aesthetics and culture before functionality.
Inspired by the visual language of contemporary Japan, streetwear, neo-nostalgia, analogue photography and internet culture, Kepiko blends Western Gen Z characters with authentic Japanese urban environments. The campaign intentionally creates a cultural contrast where the product feels simultaneously familiar and strangely aspirational, positioning the brand as a fictional yet believable lifestyle label rather than simply a food product.
Unlike a traditional branding exercise, the project extends far beyond logo design and packaging. It includes a complete brand ecosystem featuring visual identity, packaging design, advertising campaigns, AI-generated characters, merchandise, social media content, user-generated content simulations, an experimental web application for packaging visualization, and four cinematic commercial spots. Every touchpoint was designed to reinforce a consistent narrative where the product becomes a cultural artefact rather than a commodity.
The audiovisual campaign revolves around a simple but powerful idea: escaping everyday overstimulation through ritual. Each commercial follows a different protagonist overwhelmed by modern life—whether in an office, on a crowded street, inside a packed train or surrounded by digital distractions. Opening a Kepiko blister pack and cracking a single sunflower seed becomes a symbolic pause that transforms stressful environments into peaceful, aspirational spaces. These stories position the product as a moment of intentional disconnection rather than a snack, reinforcing the brand’s core philosophy that meaning can emerge from the smallest everyday gestures.
From a production perspective, Kepiko demonstrates a fully AI-assisted creative workflow that spans every stage of the branding process. Large language models were used for strategy development, concept refinement, manifesto writing and campaign scripting. Image generation models produced packaging prototypes, character sheets, key visuals and environmental concepts. Image-to-image workflows enabled consistent brand assets and character development, while video generation models were used to create cinematic advertisements. AI-generated sound effects, music experimentation, and automated prototyping complemented traditional design software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Premiere, illustrating how generative AI can integrate into established creative pipelines instead of replacing them.
A key objective throughout the project was not simply to generate attractive visuals, but to develop scalable creative workflows capable of producing consistent assets across multiple formats. Particular attention was given to character consistency, packaging accuracy, prompt engineering, reusable production pipelines and minimising manual intervention wherever possible, while still relying on human creative direction for strategic and aesthetic decision-making.
Ultimately, Kepiko serves as a case study in AI-powered brand building, demonstrating that generative AI can support not only asset creation but also worldbuilding, narrative design and integrated campaign development. Rather than treating AI as a shortcut, the project positions it as a collaborative creative tool capable of accelerating ideation, prototyping and production while maintaining a strong authorial vision.
Note: Kepiko is a fictional, non-commercial brand created as an academic research project to explore the potential of generative AI in branding, advertising and creative production.
